Sewing Leather with a Domestic Sewing Machine, Things To Do

Updated: Mar 17, 2022

Have you ever wonder if you can sew leather with your domestic sewing machine? Well, the answer is yes, you can! There are some steps to prepare for your leather project and we are here to share some tips.

Tips to Sew Leather with your Home Sewing Machine

  1. Select your Project and Leather Materials

Planning ahead will save you time and frustrations. Perhaps you are planning to sew a tote leather bag or a jacket. Whatever you have in mind, just have the pattern ready to go and the leather colors you would like to use for your project.

2. Change your Presser Foot

Your domestic sewing machine should be able to handle leather; you just need to make a few changes and your machine will be ready to go. A regular presser foot will not be suitable to sew leather because it will stick to leather and preventing the leather from feeding correctly through the machine. The right presser foot to sew leather is a roller foot or a teflon foot.

3. Stitch Length

You might choose a longer stitch to sew leather. It can be longer than a normal stitch but shorter than a basting stitch.

4. Right Thread

Do not use cotton thread for leather instead use a heavy duty polyester or nylon thread, it will give a nice look to the leather. We recommend UV polyester thread because it is more resistant to the hot weather. A good brand to buy will be Aman Threads.

5. Change your Needle

Use heavy duty leather needles with a special tip that’s made to easily pierce leather. When stitching on thicker pieces of leather, we recommend a cutting point needle. Surely, you will use more than one needle so get a whole package of leather needles. It depends on the ounces of leather is the size of the needle. To take care of your leather needle, wipe down with a dry cloth or paper towel to ensure no debris or contaminants are on needle.

It is always exited to start new projects and sew leather is one of them. Remember to plan ahead and find all the materials and accessories for your project. I hope these tips might help you in your adventure of sewing leather.
